Differences in Accommodations

First Class

First class cabins were reserved for those passengers who could afford luxury. These cabins resembled rooms from the finest hotels and homes. They were decorated in the most popular styles and included expensive finishes such as fine wood and marble. They had the best ammenities such as electric lighting and heat and immitation fireplaces. First class passengers had people called stewards who serviced their rooms and were like personal butlers. These rooms cost between 60 - 260 pounds. The more expensive cabins had multiple rooms and were called suites.

Second Class

Second class cabins, while comfortable, were much smaller and less luxurious than first class cabins. The cost of a second class room was between 13 and 79 pounds. Second class cabins consisted of just one room unlike the first class suites. The rooms usually contained space for two people and contained mohagany bed, wardrobe, and sofa. These cabins also had stewards who provided services for the passsengers.

Third Class

There were 84 third class cabins on the Titanic. Most rooms had enough bunk beds to sleep four to six people. The cabins were well built, but small. Each room had a small amount of storage and a sink. Passengers had to share public bathrooms for bathing. In fact, there were only two bathtubs for all 1,000 third class passengers - one for men and one for women. These cabins cost 7 pounds or between 25 and 49 pounds for a family.
